Moorefield resident jailed in assault of Ridgeley woman in Pennsylvania

CUMBERLAND —A former Pennsylvania man wanted in connection with the early Sunday assault of a Ridgeley, W.Va., woman in Meyersdale, Pa., and multiple reckless endangerment charges was arrested Monday when he turned himself into Cumberland Police.

Scott Lee Merrill, 37, of Moorefield, W.Va., who previously resided in Salisbury, Pa., and in Cumberland, as indicated in Pennsylvania and Maryland court documents, was arrested on a fugitive warrant from Somerset County charging him with four counts of reckless endangerment, assault and harassment.

Merrill remained jailed Tuesday at the Allegany County Detention Center without bond, pending extradition to Pennsylvania.

The charges stemmed from a Pennsylvania State Police investigation of an assault of a 38-year-old Ridgeley woman who was allegedly punched repeatedly in the head and face by Merrill before he pushed her out of his pickup truck. The incident occurred on the Shaw Mines Road near Industrial Park Road in Summit Township.

Police said Duane Hay, 31, of Meyersdale, was in the area with Rebecca Garrett, 28, of Garrett, when he heard the victim’s screams for help. Hay reportedly assisted the victim into his truck before Merrill allegedly returned and struck the rear of the Hay vehicle, pushing it down a small embankment where it nearly flipped over.

Merrill then drove out of the area, police said.

It was not known if the victim required medical treatment.

Problem resurfaces

Using air bags, divers from the Maryland Natural Resources Police on Thursday floated to the surface the Deep Creek Lake State Park work boat that had sunk the day before. NRP Sgt. Brian Albert told the Times-News at the time that park personnel, realizing the moored boat was taking on water, attempted to drive it to a shallow area, but the vessel rolled and went under. No injuries were reported. Park officials would not comment, pending completion of an official report.
