Mary Washington overpowers FSU, 82-34

FROSTBURG — Mary Washington shot 53.6 percent from the field and held Frostburg State to just 12 baskets as the No. 15 ranked Eagles downed the host Bobcats 82-34 in non-conference women’s basketball action Monday.

The Eagles (10-2) were 37-of-69 from the field and took advantage of 24 FSU (6-6) turnovers, converting them into 24 points. Mary Washington also received key minutes from it’s reserves as they scored 40 points off the bench.

Frostburg State trailed by just six points (17-11) at 12:39, but Mary Washington began to slowly pull away over the remainder of the period using a 24-6 run to open a 24-point cushion with 20 seconds left in the opening half. Junior Caryn Wright, who led the Bobcats with 15 points, made two late free throws to cut the deficit to 41-19 at intermission.

The second half didn’t prove any better for Frostburg State as it made just five baskets and was outscored 41-15. Meanwhile, Mary Washington shot 56.3 percent (18-of-32) from the floor and continued the offensive onslaught. The Eagles opened a 30-point lead (55-25) at 11:27 and a 40-point edge (72-32) with just 5:46 to play before capturing its second largest margin of victory on the season.

Wright made five of FSU’s 12 baskets while classmate Brittany James grabbed a team-high five boards.

Ashton Mitchell turned in a game-high 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting and pulled down nine boards. Katie Wimmer added 13 points followed by Kate Carlezon with 10.
