Leo Clayton Smith [Deer Park]


DEER PARK — Leo Clayton Smith, 90, of Deer Park, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010 at Garrett County Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 18, 1920 in Swanton, he was the son of the late John Ramsey Smith Sr., and Nora Evelyn (Glotfelty) Smith. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lorena Grace Smith and by his brother, Thomas Smith.

Mr. Smith was a retired telegraph operator for CSX Railroad. A World War II veteran, he proudly served his country in the Navy overseas on several battleships in the Pacific, including the USS Washington, the USS S. Dakota and was on the USS Missouri the day the peace treaty with Japan was signed. He attended Deer Park Methodist Church, he was one of the two remaining charter members of the Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department and was honored with a lifetime membership. He was a member of the American Legion, Proctor Kildow Post 71 of Oakland and the VFW, Post 10077 of Deer Park.

Surviving are his only child, Cheryl Smith of Deer Park; two brothers, Stanley Smith of Loch Lynn and John Ramsey Smith of Rawlings; sister-in-law, Patience Fitzwater of Swanton; brother-in-law, Carter Sink of Lakeland, Fla.; numerous nie-ces and nephews. He is also survived by handyman and special friend, Daniel Watring of Deer Park.

The family will receive friends at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N. Second St., Oakland, on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010 from 2 to 5 p.m.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010 in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ross Glotfelty officiating where military honors will be accorded at the conclusion of the service.

Interment will be private in Deer Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his name to the Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department or to Hospice of Garrett County.
