WESTERNPORT — One year ago today, June 26, 2010, Butch Gattens and Katie Harvey were united in marriage among their closest family and friends. The double ring ceremony took place at St. Peter’s Church in Westernport, with Monsignor Jim Hannon and the Rev. John Park officiating.
The bride is the daughter of Mark and Dianna Harvey of Keyser. She is the granddaughter of Robert Lee and Josephine Paugh of Keyser, and the late “Red” and Marion Harvey of Bloomington.
The groom is the son of Fred and Kim Gattens of Lonaconing. He is the grandson of the Betty Jo and the late Clerance Kyle, and the late Elmer and Mary Gattens of Barton.
With afternoon sunbeams shining through the church’s stained-glass windows, only candles adorned the altar at half-past one when the bride was escorted down the aisle by her father. The bride wore a strapless A-line gown with beaded lace bodice and vertical tulle and organza ruffles extending to a chapel-length train.
The bride’s accessories consisted of a pearl necklace, borrowed from her mother, blue satin heels with a sixpence in her right shoe for good luck, her Mema’s pearl ring and a white blusher veil. Her hair was styled by her friend, Angel Sensabaugh, of Bliss Boutique Salon. She also carried a classic stylized hand-tied bouquet of all white flowers, consisting of roses, stock, hydrangea, sprays of dendrobium orchids with bear grass flowing gracefully throughout.
Upon her first glance down the aisle, Katie saw her husband-to-be in a traditional black tuxedo, with white vest and bow tie. The groom’s shirt was French cuffed, with cuff-links, a gift from the bride, delivered by the best man that morning.
The couple’s siblings served as attendants.
Sarah Llewellyn of Westernport, sister of the groom, served as the matron of honor. Emma Galbraith, niece of the bride, prepared the aisle with flowers in a white ruffled organza dress, similar to the bride’s.
Jeff Galbraith, currently deployed to Kuwait, brother of the bride, served as the best man. Owen Llewellyn, nephew of the groom, wore a tuxedo matching the groom’s. He carefully delivered the couple’s rings on a satin pillow, handmade and embroidered by the groom’s mother and sister.
Music for the ceremony was provided by pianist Dawna Day. Jon Dayton assisted Monsignor Hannon and Jaden Donnellan attended the guest book. Marlee Fitzgerald, Life Images Photography, captured the day’s moments as they unfolded.
A reception immediately followed the ceremony at Maplehurst Country Club in Frostburg. The bride bustled her train and traded her traditional pearls for a necklace from the groom, engraved with her new initials. The couple was introduced by the DJ, Tim Kady, who also provided entertainment for the event. Butch and Katie immediately moved into their first dance, the waltz, to Etta James’ “At Last,” which ended with a dip and a kiss, invoking a round of applause from guests.
The four-tier wedding cake, prepared by Bonnie Goebel, featured chocolate, yellow, and red velvet layers with butter cream icing. The cake was adorned with a floral garland that matched the table arrangements and the bride’s bouquet, all arranged by Ted Henry of PharmaCare Floral.
Guests enjoyed excellent dinner and drinks, provided by Danny Adams and the Food Fellas team. Individually boxed slices of cake were given to guests as they departed for a sweet take-home favor.
As the sun began to set, Butch and Katie changed into casual clothes and rode away on Butch’s ATV, decorated by their family.
The newlyweds immediately departed for their honeymoon, where they enjoyed a week together in Jamaica.
In preparation for their upcoming nuptials, the bride was honored with a “Ja-maican” themed bridal shower, given by her matron of honor.
The groom was honored with a long weekend riding ATVs with his best man and close friends at the Hatfield McCoy trails.
A rehearsal barbecue, hosted by the groom’s parents, was held in their back yard for the wedding party, family, and close friends the evening before the ceremony.
A 2004 graduate of Westmar High School, Katie attended West Virginia University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in public relations. She is currently employed with the Joint Interagency Training and Education Center, Kingwood.
Butch is a 1997 graduate of Westmar High School and a 1999 graduate of DeVry Institute of Technology, Columbus, Ohio. He is currently employed as the biomedical engineering coordinator at Western Maryland Health System.
Butch and Katie currently reside in Cumberland. The couple would like to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation to everyone involved in creating the wedding of their dreams.
