Hammer, Savage wedding

OAKLAND — Bethany Ann Savage and Michael Richard Hammer exchanged wedding vows on June 27, 2009, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Oakland. The Rev. Dr. Scott Robinson performed the 5:30 p.m. ceremony. Muriel Franc served as the organist. Susan Peterson accompanied on the piano and flute and performed a duet with Rev. Scott Robinson who played guitar.

The bride is the daughter of Terry and Carol Savage of Oakland. She is the granddaughter of Floretta Savage of Oakland. Bethany graduated from Southern High School in 2000 and from West Virginia University in 2004, with a degree in business administration and marketing. She is employed as a pharmaceutical representative with Publicis for Pfizer and is a cheerleader for the Washington Redskins.

The groom is the son of Charles and Valerie Hammer of Fairfax, Va. Michael is a 1999 graduate of Robinson High School, Fairfax, and a 2003 graduate of Georgetown University, with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He is employed by Clark Construction of Bethesda as a project superintendent.

Serving as matron of honor was Brianne (Meyers) Rowh of Columbia. Bridesmaids were Megan (Mahaffey) Hamerski of Frederick, friend of the bride; Holly Hammer of Santa Monica, Calif., sister of the groom; Julie Hammer of Chapel Hill, N.C., sister-in-law of the groom; Heather Hanline of Charlotte, N.C., friend of the bride; Leigh Huckabee, Pittsburgh, Pa., friend of the bride; Elizabeth Losi of Reston, Va., friend of the bride and groom; Leslie Menich of Myrtle Beach, S.C., friend of the bride; and Emily (Nemith) Saunders of Winston-Salem, N.C., friend of the bride.

Serving as Best Man was Mac Hammer of Chapel Hill, brother of the groom. Groomsmen were Michael Chiara, Pat Collins, Kyle Sweeney and Trevor Walker, all of New York City and friends of the groom; Matthew Fassnacht, friend of the groom, Burke, Va.; John MacDonnell of Washington, D.C., friend of the groom; and Matthew Manning of Burke, friend of the groom. Ryan Hammer, nephew of the groom, was the ring bearer.

Following the ceremony, the wedding party rode away from the church on the Oakland Fire Department’s old “Number 1” antique fire truck driven by John Feather. This was to honor the memory of Stanley Savage, grandfather of the bride, who had served as a fire chief for the department.

Following the ceremony, a reception was held at Will O’ the Wisp, Deep Creek Lake. Entertainment was provided by Gonzo’s Nose, a popular band from Washington, D.C.

A rehearsal dinner was hosted by the groom’s parents on June 26 at their rental home on Deep Creek Lake and was catered by The FazenBakery & Catering Company of Accident.

The couple traveled to St. John’s, U.S. Virgin Islands for their honeymoon. They currently reside in Alexandria, Va.
