GRANTSVILLE — On July 9, 2011, Melissa Lynn Root and William Michael Bergan were united in marriage at St. Ann Roman Catholic Church in Grantsville. Monsignor Jim Hannon officiated over the ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Michael and Kathleen Root, Grantsville. She is the granddaughter of Francis and Connie Mazzye, Syracuse, N.Y.
The groom is the son of William and Beverly Bergan, Hagerstown. He is the grandson of William and Eleanor Bergan, Pottsville, Pa., and Mary Hashin, Minersville, Pa.
Serving as maid of honor was Jaclyn Stewart, friend of the bride and groom. Bridesmaids were Maria Bergan, sister of the groom, Julie Maddox and Amanda Burns, friends of the bride and groom. Serving as flower girl was Katelyn Oswalt, cousin of the bride.
Serving as best man was Jeffrey Sligh, friend of the bride and groom. Groomsmen were Christopher Root, brother of the bride, Ryan Abe and Robert Haight, friends of the bride and groom. Serving as ring bearer was Ryan Franko, friend of the bride and groom.
The reception was held at Will ’O the Wisp, Oakland. The couple honeymooned in St. Lucia.
Melissa is a 2002 graduate of Howard High School, Columbia, and a 2007 graduate of Frostburg State University, Frostburg, with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood/elementary education and a 2009 graduate of Frostburg State University with a master’s degree in special education. She is employed by Washington County Public Schools, Hagerstown, as a preschool autism teacher.
William is a 2003 graduate of North Hagerstown High School, Hagerstown, a 2007 graduate of Frostburg State University, Frostburg, with a bachelor’s degree in elementary/middle school education and a 2009 graduate of Frostburg State University, with a master’s degree in administration/supervision. He is employed by Washington County Public Schools, Williamsport, as an eighth-grade English teacher.
Melissa and William currently reside in Greencastle, Pa.

A retired sergeant major of the United States Marine Corps, Shon serves as a bishop in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fredericksburg, Va.
