KEYSER, W.Va. — Potomac State College goalkeeper Conor Fungaroli was voted to the All-Region XX men’s soccer team for the second season in a row, and was joined on this year’s first team by teammates Gudie Guzman and Steve Holtschneider.
Fungaroli, a sophomore from Bedford, Pa., gave up just 10 goals and posted 10 shutouts in leading the Catamounts’ stingy defense. He was also voted to the Region XX all-tournament team. This year, he had a 0.69 goals against average and an .836 save percentage.
Guzman, a sophomore forward/midfielder from El Salvador, led the team and was 37th nationally with seven assists. In his two seasons, he scored three goals and had 13 assists.
Holtschneider, a sophomore and former area high school star at Northern Garrett, scored six goals and had one assist, giving him eight goals and three assists during his PSC career. Like Fungaroli, Holtschneider was also selected to the Region XX all-tournament team.
Former Mountain Ridge High standout Justin Winebrenner was voted to the All-Region XX second team and the Region XX all-tournament team. He had five goals and four assists this year and nine goals and six assists over his two years at Potomac State.
The Region XX sophomore all-star game was played at Anne Arundel Community College on Nov. 2. Representing the Catamounts were Nathan Main and Henry Herkes of Australia, and former area standouts Jeffrey Trautwein (Northern) and Garrett Kiddy (Allegany).
Main, a midfielder, had three goals and two assists during his PSC career, and Herkes scored three goals as a defensive midfielder. Kiddy had four goals and five assists in two seasons. Trautwein was a two-year starting midfielder.
Potomac State finished the year with a 15-3 record and reached the Region XX championship game, which Montgomery-Rockville won 1-0.
Freshman Chris Ranker, of Mountain Ridge, finished tied for 14th in the country among NJCAA Division III players in goals with 14, and sophomore Trey Ogilvie tied for 21st with 12 goals.
