FROSTBURG — Frostburg State surrendered an early first half lead and couldn't recover in a 53-42 loss to Capital Athletic Conference opponent Mary Washington Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.
The Bobcats were led by junior Elaina Hummel who finished with a game-high 14, notching her fourth consecutive game in double-digits. Senior Brynn Arnone finished with nine points, an assist, two steals and a block while sophomore Ronje’ James paced the Bobcats in rebounding with eight.
The Eagles (15-5, 6-1 CAC) held the Bobcats to just one bucket and with the help of three long balls took the advantage early in the game at 14:30, 15-2.
The Bobcats allowed Mary Washington to retain the lead for the length of the contest struggling behind a 29.6 field goal percentage.
FSU (6-13, 1-6 CAC) made a solid push at the end of the half with a jumper from James at 2:51 to post the score at 21-12. Two free throws by Arnone brought the Bobcats within seven with just two minutes left in the first half.
Mary Washington answered right back with three buckets to achieve a double-digit lead going into halftime, 27-16.
The second half rang the same tune as the Eagles grew their lead to 14, 34-20 with 15:24 left to play.
The Bobcat defense forced 18 turnovers and scored 14 points off of Mary Washington errors. The scrappy defense dwindled the Eagles’ lead to five, 34-29, with 9:42 due to fast break opportunities and a solid four point performance from Arnone during the run.
FSU couldn't capitalize on the momentum as the Eagles put together one last scoring run for the 11-point final.
The Eagles’ Sam Partonen led the teams’ balanced scoring with 10 points.
FSU visits non-conference opponent Southern Virginia Wednesday at 6 p.m.
