Frostburg State holds on, keeps Washington winless, 74-73

ASHLAND, Va. — Frostburg State had three starters score in double figures, but had to hold off a hard-charging Washington squad for a slim 74-73 win Sunday in the consolation game of the 2012 Randolph-Macon Coaches Classic.

The Bobcats (5-8) led by eight points in the closing minutes, but Washington (0-11) didn’t give up without a fight. The Shoremen scored six-straight points in a little under a minute to trail by just two, 72-70, with 2:24 showing on the clock.

Neither team scored for the next two minutes, until sophomore David Patrick gave FSU some much needed breathing room with a layup with 23 seconds left that extended the lead to 74-70.

Washington’s Stephen Poarch hit a three-pointer with just three seconds left to narrow the deficit to 74-73, but a three-pointer as time expired was off the mark and FSU escaped with the win.

The Bobcats shot 52.5 (31-of-59) percent from the field, held a 46-28 edge in rebounds and dominated the paint (40-24). However, Frostburg had to overcome 14 turnovers, which Washington turned in 20 points, and nine three-pointers from the Shoremen.

Frostburg trailed by as many as five points, 21-16, midway through the first half and trailed 38-34 at halftime. FSU grabbed a one-point lead, 41-40, early in the second half thanks to a 7-2 run. The Bobcats never trailed again.

Senior Christian Jackson posted his second-consecutive double-double behind 29 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Kwambina Coker added 12 points while freshman Royce Hunsberger scored 10.

Washington had four players in double figures, including three starters. Poarch led the way with 22 points and seven assists in 34 minutes of action.

Frostburg jumps back into Capital Athletic Conference action when it hosts St. Mary’s next Saturday at 3 p.m.
