CUMBERLAND — Six players scored and the defense posted its 11th shutout as the top-ranked Allegany Campers put the finishing touches on an undefeated regular season with a 7-0 romp over Southern Wednesday evening at Greenway Avenue Stadium.
The win makes coach Stephen Cavallo’s team 13-0-1 heading into the Class 1A West Region playoffs. Allegany, the No. 1 seed in the region, will play the winner of Friday’s Southern/Smithsburg game on Tuesday, at Greenway, at 7:15 p.m.
“It’s a great accomplishment for our boys to have an undefeated regular season. They’ve worked very hard for this and I’m proud of them,” said Cavallo.
“We can celebrate tonight, but have to get back to work tomorrow. The postseason starts now. Everyone is 0-0 and it’s win or go home. We know we have to work even harder now to reach our postseason goals.”
Corey Knipple had two goals and an assist, Dakota Bierman a goal and an assist and Derek Fuller three assists in the win over Southern.
Brett Vanderhout scored first, on a feed from Fuller, just 1:48 into the match. Knipple made it 2-0 nine minutes later on an assist from Bierman, and Austin Campbell gave Alco a 3-0 halftime lead by scoring on another Fuller assist with 11:39 on the clock.
Brooke Knieriem began a four-goal second half with an unassisted goal 1:29 into the half. Knipple, Bierman and Tompkins tacked on the final three goals. Fuller and Knipple had second-half assists.
Allegany led in shots 22-6 and in corner kicks 8-2. Nate Condor made five saves in goal for the Campers, who have allowed only three goals for the season, and one in their last 10 games.
Conner Bosley had eight saves for Southern (2-8), who plays at Smithsburg on Friday, at 6 o’clock, in a first-round playoff game.
Allegany won the jayvee game 5-0, getting goals from Logan Hartlaub, Max Phillips, Bryce Sainz, Carter Willetts and Cody Cecil.
