SALEM, Va. — Danny Morris and Rob Jennings knocked in three runs each to lead Frostburg State to an 11-5 win over Roanoke in the rubber game of the Bobcats’ season-opening three game series.
The Bobcats (2-1) led 5-3 after five innings, then blew the game open with a six-run sixth.
Morris finished 3 for 5 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Jennings was 1 for 4 and also had three RBIs and two runs scored. Pat Sapp and Ryan McGuigan had two hits and scored twice.
Cody Ellsworth pitched the first four innings, allowed six hits and three runs and struck out six for the win.
McGuigan’s RBI single knocked in the first run in the six-run sixth. Two batters later, with the bases loaded, Jennings smacked a two-run double to center that made it 8-3. Morris followed with an RBI single and Zach Keeler capped the inning with a two-run single.
Frostburg State will host Old Westbury on Saturday in Crozet, Va., at 1:00 p.m.
Lenoir 10 8
Allegany 7 2
KINSTON, N.C. — Lenoir used the big inning in both games to deal Allegany College two losses in chilly North Carolina.
Lenoir scored four runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth inning in the 10-7 first-game win, then scored three times in the first and five times in the sixth of the second game to complete the sweep with an 8-2 win.
The Lancers got a double and two RBIs from Trent Murray in the opener, and Kyle Smith earned a save after coming on in the seventh to limit a Trojans rally to two runs.
Blayne McGuirk drove in two runs with a triple for the Trojans. Mountain Ridge graduate Cody Malone and Dylan Corl had two singles and two runs scored.
The Lancers broke open a 3-2 game in the nitecap with five runs in the sixth inning. Smith had an RBI double and Tyler Tant had two singles and two RBIs.
Malone hit a RBI triple for ACM (0-3).
“We beat the weather, but that’s about it,” said Allegany head coach Steve Bazarnic. “I thought we hit very well for coming right out of the gym, but we still have some work to do on fielding and cutting down a little on the walks.
Both Ryan (Redinger) and Zach (Bradfield) pitched well enough to win but we made a few too many mistakes. We’ll get on the practice field and shore those up when we get back.”
Allegany, which got both games in just before the snow hit, returns home and hopes for better weather when they play Westmoreland at home on March 2.
Patrick Henry 4 11
Garrett 1 6
MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Garrett couldn’t get the bats going in the first game and couldn’t stop the bleeding in the second as the Lakers dropped their season-opening doubleheader with Patrick Henry.
The Patriots fired a one-hitter to win the opener and collected 11 hits in the nitecap.
Jason Turner and Alex Brown combined for 12 strikeouts and allowed just a single in the sixth inning to lead Patrick Henry in the first game. Justin Kime had two of the Pats’ six hits with a pair of singles.
Luis Rios singled home Garret’s only run in the sixth inning. Korey Reed pitched five innings and struck out eight in the loss.
The Lakers got out to a faster start in the second game when Jason Hepple connected for a three-run home run in the top of the first inning.
Garrett was able to stay in front until Patrick Henry scored four times in the fourth and four more times in the fifth.
Will Hylton hit a solo home run and a single for the Patriots, and Wesley Orfield added two base hits and two runs.
Besides, Hepple’s homer, Garrett (0-2) got three singles for Corey Helbig.
The two teams play again today in a single game at noon.
