CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Frankfort Falcons return to the West Virginia Class AA state volleyball tournament this morning and will take on Nicholas County in a first-round match at the Charleston Civic Center.
The Class AA morning matches pit Oak Glen against James Monroe, and Frankfort against Nicholas County, at 8:30 a.m. The winners will play in a semifinal at 6:30 p.m.
Coach Mary Slider’s Falcons (35-8-1) won the Region 2 championship last week, first sweeping Liberty Harrison 25-21, 25-11, 25-15 and then beating Philip Barbour in the championship match by 25-17, 25-18, 15-25, 25-16.
Stephanie Cornachia, Brittany Porter and Mikala Miller teamed for 67 kills for the day. Cornachia finished with 20 service points, three aces, 29 kills and 17 digs, Porter 20 points, three aces, 18 kills and 49 digs, and Miller 14 points, 20 kills, 29 digs and five blocks.
Alexis Rice had 72 assists, 19 points, seven aces, six blocks and 15 digs, Autumn Dishman 55 digs, eight points and two aces and Taylor Sisk 11 kills and three blocks.
Frankfort was state runner-up in 2009, and lost in the semifinals the last two years. The Falcons lost to eventual state champ Oak Hill, 3-1, in last year’s tournament.
Nicholas County (25-16-2), of Summersville, lost to Herbert Hoover in their region championship match, 25-19, 24-26, 21-25, 25-22, 18-16.
In the other Class AA quarterfinals, PikeView takes on Ritchie County and Herbert Hoover plays Philip Barbour today at 1:30. The winners play in a semifinal at 8 p.m.
The state championship match is Saturday at noon.
