CUMBERLAND — Allegany’s Stephen Cavallo and Calvary Christian’s Ryan Chaney, who led their teams to record-setting seasons, and Mountain Ridge’s Martha Mauzy, who coached a record sixth area championship team, were selected the Pepsi-Cola High School Soccer Coaches of the Year.
The coaches will receive the awards at the Dapper Dan Awards Dinner on Sunday, Jan. 27, 4 p.m., at the Ali Ghan Shrine Club.
• Cavallo, in his second year as coach of the Allegany boys, led the Campers to its first unbeaten regular season in school history at 13-0-1. Allegany set school records for wins (15), consecutive wins (11) and longest unbeaten streak (16 games) and won the Times-News Area championship for the first time. The Campers, who finished 15-1-1, also won the City and Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference crowns.
Cavallo, 23, of Charlotte, N.C., played soccer at Frostburg State and took over at Allegany a week before the 2011 season started. He has a 21-7-3 two-year record at Allegany.
• Chaney led Calvary Christian to a school-record 22 wins in 27 games. Ironically, the 22 wins broke the previous record of 21 set by the 2005 team. Chaney was a senior forward and the area player of the year that season.
After winning the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference, the Eagles finished fifth in the Association of Christian Athletes National Tournament in Dayton, Tenn. They went 4-1 on the national stage and outscored their opponents by a 10-1 margin. The only loss came in a penalty kick shootout after a scoreless tie.
Chaney, in three seasons at Calvary, has a 50-19-3 coaching record.
• Mauzy directed Mountain Ridge the girls soccer area championship with a 14-2-1 record. The Miners were unbeaten AMAC champions and outscored their opposition by a 67-12 margin.
Mountain Ridge opened its doors six years ago, and the Lady Miners have won the area championship in four of those six seasons, the titles coming in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012.
Mauzy, whose Beall teams won area championships in 2003 and 2006, has a 161-38-9 coaching record and had undefeated regular seasons in 2003, 2008, 2009 and 2010 in 13 seasons at the Frostburg school.
She is also the head coach of the Mountain Ridge softball team, which went 23-0 and won the state championship last year.
