OAKLAND — Landon Todd hit a basket with 14 seconds remaining and Southern held on to defeat Frankfort 43-42 in the season opener for both teams Wednesday night at Southern High School.

Alex Fike led the Rams with 10 points and Todd finished with nine as Southern’s overall scoring proved to be the difference in its come-from-behind victory. Brian Wildman added seven points and Clay Todd finished with six.

Both Chase Detrick and Gage Shaffer had game-highs with 12 points each for the Falcons. Colten Dorsey added nine and Shane Cutter and Nick Smith combined for nine points.

Frankfort led most of the first half, 11-6 after the first quarter and held a three-point, 22-19 edge at halftime. Southern, however, battled back outscoring the Falcons 11-3 in the third quarter to take a 30-25 lead into the final eight minutes. Southern, which led by seven early in the fourth quarter, needed Landon Todd’s basket to reclaim the lead at the end. Frankfort, following a timeout, missed its game-winning shot and Southern grabbed the rebound for the victory.

Southern won both the junior varsity and freshmen games. Josh Adams scored 12 points in the 44-14 jayvee victory and Will Fredlock hit for 11 in the 33-28 freshman game. Jake Young led all scorers with 18 points.

Southern (1-0) visits Bishop Walsh Friday while Franfort returns to Garrett County to take on Northern the same night.

ACCIDENT — After a slow start in the first quarter, Allegany scored 28 points in the second quarter to take a 42-15 lead over Northern at halftime of a 47-point win over the Huskies on Wednesday during each school’s opener.

Christian Thomas led the way for the Campers with 25 points on six field goals and an 11-for-13 night from the foul line, He made it a double-double by grabbing 11 rebounds and added five steals.

Trenton Eirich had 22 points and five assists and Bryce Nightengale did a little of everything by scoring 11 points, collecting seven rebounds, blocking four shots and swiping four passes. Derek Hickle also had 11 points, and Colton Sivic had 12 rebounds.

The Campers got out to a 14-8 lead by the end of the first quarter, but laid on the gas in the second to create a 27-point lead by halftime.

Northern’s Jordan Evans and Tyler Yutzy led their team with seven points apiece.

Allegany won the junior varsity game 63-26. Derek Kerns scored 16 points, Darquel Jessie had 14 and Trevor Evix finished with 12. Hunter Mallow and Zach Voelkel had seven points each in the loss.

Allegany stays on the road to play Hampshire on Tuesday. Northern hosts Frankfort on Friday.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — Quincy Redmon paced Bishop Walsh in scoring and rebounding as the Spartans continued to pull away from Berkeley Springs to improve to 5-0 win a 34-point win Wednesday evening.

Redmon finished with 22 points and 13 boards to go with four assists and four steals, while teammates Liam Rhodes and Hunter Morrale both finished with 11 points. Rhodes added five assists and, and Brandon Reed finished up with six rebounds, three assists and three steals to go with four points.

The Spartan constructed a 22-9 lead over the Indians during the first quarter and increased the lead to 17 points by halftime (35-18). By the end of the third, Bishop Walsh had pulled away for a 50-23 lead.

Berkeley Springs got a team-high 13 points from Kyle Appel and 11 more from Zach Wise.

The Indians won the jayvee game 32-31 behind 10 points from Ben Solomon. Bishop Walsh got 10 from Isaiah Frazor.

The Spartans try to remain undefeated when they host Southern on Friday.

CLEAR SPRING — Aaron scored 20 points, going 14-for-15 from the free-throw line as Clear Spring outshot Mountain Ridge from the line, 24-6, to defeat the Miners in the season-opener for both teams.

Rowley scored 14 for the Blazers, while Quillic scored nine.

For Mountain Ridge, Rashawn Johnson scored 12 points, Steven Glasbrenner 10 and Kevin Gamble eight.

Mountain Ridge led 32-24 at the half and 41-37 after three, but the Blazers outscored the Miners, 18-8, in the fourth quarter.

Mountain Ridge was called for 29 personal fouls with three players fouling out. Clear Spring was whistled 14 times.

Mountain Ridge won the junior varsity game, 74-24, as Dylan Shimko scored 19 for the Miners, with Dylan Williams and Michael Livingston both scoring 11. The Mountain Ridge freshmen lost, 30-26. Tyler Thomas scored nine points.

Mountain Ridge will host Fort Hill Friday, with the jayvee game beginning at 6 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30 p.m.

CROSS JUNCTION, Va. — Paw Paw opened its season with a one-point victory over Timber Ridge Tuesday at Timber Ridge.

Josh Newlon led the Pirates with 24 points, while Demetrius Graves scored 15 for Timber Ridge.

Paw Paw (1-0) will host Turkeyfoot Valley, Pa. Monday at 7:30 p.m.
