HAGERSTOWN — Liam Rhodes scored 17 points to lead Bishop Walsh to a season-opening 63-51 high school boys basketball victory over St. Maria Goretti in the Gaels’ tournament on Friday night.
Big first and fourth quarters made the difference for the Spartans, who led 20-12 after the first eight minutes.
Both teams scored just seven points in the second quarter, which gave BW a 27-19 lead at halftime.
Goretti grabbed the momentum to start the third quarter, outscoring the Spartans 22-10 to take a four-point advantage into the final period.
Bishop Walsh took back the lead with a dominant fourth quarter, outscoring Goretti 26-10 and converting 17 of 19 free throws to clinch the win.
Quincy Redmon grabbed 10 rebounds to go with 12 points. Hunter Marrale added 15 points and five rebounds.
Bishop Walsh will play St. Mary’s Ryken tonight at 8 o’clock in the tournament championship game.
St. Mary’s Ryken defeated South Lake Christian Academy, coached by Rodney Monroe, former St. Maria Goretti and N.C. State star.
