Alco outlasts Southern

Eirich scores 23, Campers win sixth straight 52-40

OAKLAND — Trenton Eirich converted 13 of 16 free throws and scored a game-high 23 points to lead top-ranked Allegany to a 52-40 win over fifth-ranked Southern Saturday evening.

The win was the sixth in a row for the Campers (13-4, 12-1 Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference) and gave them a sweep of the season series.

The Rams (7-9, 6-6) led early and made it a one-point possession at one point in the fourth quarter but were never able to regain the lead.

Bryce Nightengale added 12 points and Christian Thomas had nine for Allegany.

Lucas Ritchie hit three three-point goals and 12 points for Southern. Alex Fike added six points and nine rebounds.

Southern led 15-11 after the first quarter, but managed only 25 more points the rest of the night. Allegany led 29-21 at the half and 37-31 after three quarters.

The Rams got to within three and had a chance to close the gap even further with 4:59 to play but missed a pair of technical foul shots.

Allegany plays at Bishop Walsh on Tuesday in a game that will have major implications in the AMAC and City Leagues. Both have only one loss in each league. A win would give Allegany the City championship. A BW win would give the Spartans the City League lead with a game at Fort Hill to play.

Southern plays at Mountain Ridge Tuesday night.

Southern won the jayvee game 38-34 behind a 19-point game by Travis Newton. Dajaun Pendergast had 13 for Allegany.

Allegany won the freshman game 41-28. Jason Copman poured in 22 for the Campers and Tristian Baker led the Rams with 13.

Union    46

PADEN CITY, W.Va. — Union rallied in the third quarter to cut into Paden City’s lead, but the Tigers couldn’t carry the momentum into the fourth quarter as they wound up losing by 10 Saturday afternoon.

Zach Helsey scored 19 points and Kennedy Kane added 17 in the win. They helped Paden City to an 8-0 start and a 14-10 lead after one quarter and 29-19 at halftime. Union sliced the lead to 34-30 at the end of the third before falling off the pace in the fourth. Paden City finished strong, hitting 16-of-26 free throws during the fourth quarter.

Union’s Travis Murphy recorded a game-high 21 points and Nathan Evans had eight points.

The Tigers (10-4) will host Calvary on Tuesday.

Calvary    70

CRESAPTOWN  — New Life relied on sharp foul shooting to hold on to a late lead and fend off a resilient Calvary for a 75-70 win Friday in Mason Dixon Conference action.

Connor Brown scored a game-high 32 points, Austin Brown added 17 and Jeremiah Chambers scored 16 as New Life trailed by one with under a minute to play before secure the win at the foul line. It finished 22-for-26 as a time from the line, including the final four insurance points.

Only four players scored for Calvary, but all of them had at least 11 with Tyler Michael leading the way with 28. Matt Dillow scored 19 points, Mark Capper added 12 and Justin Swogger chipped in with 11.

The five-point loss is a far cry from the 70-40 score that New Life won by four weeks ago.

The Calvary junior varsity team won 28-27 when Zach Mason nailed the game-winning free throw one second remaining. The Eagles got 12 points from Dalton Lowery while Mason finished with seven.

The Eagles (9-9, 5-6) plays Hyndman at home on Monday.
