ACCIDENT — Second-ranked Southern scored four consecutive goals to erase an early deficit and beat Northern, 4-2, Wednesday evening at Northern.
Emily Fratz got the early goal for Northern, 15 minutes into the match, but Alicia Roth began the four-goal spurt by the Rams, tying it by scoring on an assist from Marley Merrick at 22:26.
Alli Shaffer’s unassisted goal gave Southern a 2-1 halftime lead.
Tess Watson and Jess Cooper scored in the first seven minutes of the second half to boost the Southern lead to 4-1. Watson’s score came unassisted and Cooper scored on a pass from Alicia Harpole.
Northern’s Callie Vernon got the final goal of the night, scoring off a corner kick by Madi Gallagher at 25:22.
Southern led in shots 8-6 and in corner kicks 6-3. Annie Martin made two saves in goal for the Rams and Kloey Werner had four for the Huskies.
Southern (9-5), which has won four of its last five, is the No. 2 seed in the Class 1A West Region playoffs and will host the Brunswick/Hancock winner on Tuesday.
Northern (7-6-1) plays again tonight, in a first-round playoff game against Allegany. The game will be at Northern and begin at 7 p.m.
The Northern-Southern jayvee game ended in a 2-2 tie.
