PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Amber Shirk scored 36 seconds into the second half to give Petersburg a 3-2 lead that would stick for the final 39 minutes as Petersburg won its first playoff game Monday with a win over Berkeley Springs in the West Virginia Class AA Sectional playoffs.
Elise Cardot spotted the Vikings a 2-0 lead after she was assisted by Lauren Harman at 35:46 and Shirk at 20:01.
Berkeley Springs rallied in the final 12 minutes of the half, getting two unassisted goals from Sarah Allman to tie the score.
Shirk scored the go-ahead goal on an assist from April Kessel.
Petersburg (5-9-2) led 15-9 in total shots, but trailed the Indians 8-2 in corner kicks.
Sydney Brewer had six saves during the win, and Berkeley Springs goalie Cowles finished with nine saves.
The Vikings will play at Grafton today at 6 p.m. in the second round. Grafton is 13-4-2.
