Allegany 44
CUMBERLAND — Dejhonae Cannady scored 26 points and Tyonna Lawson added 20 as defending Maryland JUCO champion Chesapeake beat Allegany College of Maryland Thursday in the Trojans’ home opener.
The Skipjacks played their way to a 45-22 lead at halftime behind the scoring performance by Cannady and Teamer, and the defense prevented the Trojans from rallying in the second half to drop Allegany to 0-2.
Brittany Taylor added 10 points, and Sydney Small had nine for Chesapeake.
Allegany was led in scoring by Maddie Nightengale’s 18 points. The sophomore from Mountain Ridge made five field goals, including one three, and went 7 for 10 from the foul line, while Dirica Souder had eight points.
Monique Rhodes had a Trojan-high 10 rebounds to go with five points, and Christina Briscoe finished with five points and five assists.
“Chesapeake is a very good team,” said Allegany head coach Bethany Sindy. “It’s a good challenge to play such an athletic team this early in the year. It gives us something to work on as a team and prepare for the rest of the season.”
The Trojans (0-1 MDJUCO) will play in the Frederick Mixer beginning Saturday with a game against Delaware Tech at 5 p.m.
