KEYSER, W.Va. — Brittany Kolb went 4-for-4 in the first game and Melanie Carroll homered in the second to lead Potomac State made its season debut with a 9-1, 14-5 sweep of CCAC-South on Wednesday afternoon.
Both games were shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.
In the opener, the Catamounts pounced on South with a six-run first inning. Kolb and Kayla Stickel led off with singles, and Potomac State took advantage of several South errors for the big inning.
Kolb finished 4-for-4 with a triple, three singles and two RBIs for Potomac State. Stickel added a pair of singles.
Aaryka Anglin got the win, allowing only one hit and one run while striking out four in four innings.
In the second game, the Catamounts again used a big first inning to take control. This time, they scored five times in the first, and led 14-2 after a seven-run third.
Carroll had hits in both big innings, belting a three-run homer in the first and a double in the third. Tiffany Biggs and Haylie Harper had two singles and three RBIs. Stickel and Rochelle Wolford doubled and singled and Kolb had two singles in a 14-hit attack.
Wolford, Biggs and Stickel teamed for a five-hitter and seven strikeouts.
Potomac State will host Southern Maryland on Saturday at 1 o’clock.

Keyser splits pair, stays alive in state tournament
Keyser got off on the wrong foot in the very first inning of the very first West Virginia State Softball Tournament game in school history, allowing four unearned runs in the first inning to fall behind 5-1, before dropping the first game of the Class AA tournament, 9-4, to top-seeded Ritchie County Wednesday morning at Jackson Park.

Frostburg State sophomore Caitlin Lovend was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III All-Atlantic Region First Team.

Southern comeback stuns No. 5 Keyser in 8

KEYSER, W.Va. — Jessica Shirley hit two home runs in the same inning and it was just a taste of Potomac State’s offensive output as the Catamounts swept both games of a doubleheader by the same 19-0 score Monday during local JUCO softball action in Keyser.
Potomac State had already taken an 8-0 lead in the first inning of the first game before scoring 11 times in the second to account for all of its runs. The Cats followed a similar path in the second game by scoring 10 times in the first inning and adding nine in the second before holding on for another big win. -
Lough helps Petersburg sweep Ty Valley
PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Whitney Lough threw a three-inning no-hitter in the opener before allowing two hits in three innings in the second to lead Petersburg to a sweep of a doubleheader with Tygarts Valley Monday in Petersburg.
