MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — Kelsea Kight’s three-run double highlighted Moorefield’s big third inning as the Yellow Jackets defeated Hampshire 6-2 in the season opener for both teams Wednesday afternoon.
Kight’s hit highlighted a six-run third inning that propelled Moorefield to the victory despite committing six errors and only having three hits. Hailey Arose had an RBI triple and Kristen Ball had a base hit. Both scored a run.
Hampshire (0-1) had seven hits, led by Kasey Patterson’s and Autumn Chaney’s two singles apiece. Karisa Saville also had a hit and scored a run.
Madeline Elmore pitched five innings with four strikeouts, no walks and one earned run to get the win. Patterson had a three-hitter in the complete-game loss.
Moorefield won the jayvee game 17-2, ending the contest in the third inning due to the 15-run rule. McKenzie Weese was 3-for-3 with three doubles and three RBIs. Taylor Zuber was the winning pitcher striking out three, walking two and giving up two hits.
Hampshire visits Washington tonight for a 5 p.m. game. Moorefield (1-0) hosts Frankfort Friday, also at 5 p.m.
