Chessie 5

CUMBERLAND — Tristan Beyer singled home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cap a late-game comeback that lifted second-seeded Times-News over third-seeded Chessie Credit Union in the opening game of their best-of-three series.

The Times-News trailed 5-1 through four innings, tied it with a four-run fifth, went ahead with a pair in the sixth, then got out of a seventh-inning jam to win it.

Danny Mock’s two-run single highlighted the four-run fifth. In the sixth, Lucas Trunkle led off with a single, Aaron O’Rourke reached on an error and Beyer singled home Trunkle to give the Times-News its first lead. O’Rourke scored on another error for an insurance run.

Chessie threatened in the top of the seventh when Matt Farris walked, moved to second on an error and got to third on a single by Josh Jenkins. After a fly out, the Times-News turned a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Beyer and Trunkle led the Times-News (10-6-1) with two singles.

Chessie (9-8) lost despite outhitting the Times-News 13-6. Patrick Livingston hit a triple and two singles, Logan Harden had a double and single, Sean Nolan doubled and Josh Neilson singled three times.

The series continues Wednesday at the Frostburg Armory at 5:30.
