BEL AIR — Roger Piper singled home the winning run of the final regular-season Rec League baseball game, lifting Hite Roofing to a 6-5 win over Fort Ashby VFW on Tuesday.
Piper’s hit was the 11th for Hite Roofing, and scored Alex Shingle from second base. Shingle had singled earlier in the inning with John Taylor on first base. Taylor was attempting to go from first to third when the ball was overthrown at third and allowed him to score the tying run.
Taylor also doubled, and Shane Malloy finished with three singles. David Smith singled twice, and Cody Jefferys doubled.
Roy Jefferys tossed a complete game, and threw more than 12 pitches in only one inning. He allowed 10 hits to go with the five runs.
Dylan Wagoner and Marcus Weaver had two singles for Fort Ashby. Brian Forrester and Weaver combined for 10 strikeouts in the loss.
The teams were tied 3-3 after three innings, and Hite Roofing led 4-3 after the fourth. Fort Ashby tied it in the sixth and went ahead with one run in the top of the seventh.
Hite Roofing finished the season 8-10, and Fort Ashby ended up 7-10-1.
