FROSTBURG — Logan Harden’s long home run in the fifth inning proved to be the difference Monday as Chessie Federal Credit Union took game one of its opening round Rec Baseball League playoff series with Sweitzer, Simson and Associates by a final of 4-3.
Harden’s homer cleared the center-field fence at the Frostburg Armory Field, and landed on the third-base side of the Little League field behind it.
The two runs from the home run gave Chessie a 4-1 lead at the time. Sweitzer, Simson and Associates scored two runs on a Cody Parsons double in the top of the sixth inning, but Chessie got out of any further damage when Parsons was thrown out trying to get stretch the hit into a triple.
Corey Greig, who had eight strikeouts in a complete-game win, not only escaped trouble in the sixth, but got out of a fifth-inning situation with two runners on when he struck out three straight batters.
Sean Fazenbaker and Josh Weimer each hit a double, with Fazenbaker getting an RBI on his.
For SS&A;, Shane Weaver hit a double and a single, Reese Duncan a double, and Spencer Barnard two singles. Sweitzer had seven hits to Chessie’s three.
Chessie (16-1-2) will try to take the series on Wednesday when the teams play at Southern High School, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
