11/23 - Police issue reminder

CUMBERLAND — Cumberland Police are reminding the public what their uniforms look like after a man reported being stopped and patted down Saturday night by a possible police impersonator.

The 40-year-old man told police he was on Bellevue Street just before 9 p.m. when he was approached by a man wearing a black uniform with green stripes on the legs and police insignias. The suspect, described as a white male, 6-foot-2, with a thin build and short blond hair, left in a silver Toyota Corolla after questioning the man, who became suspicious and called police.

Cumberland police officers may wear a blue or white dress uniform with dark blue pants and a visible badge along with Cumberland Police insignias. Officers may also be seen wearing black BDU style uniforms with a swen-on badge and Cumberland Police insignias. All Cumberland Police officers, whether in uniform or plain clothes, are required to carry a badge and photo identification.
