‘Suspicious’ device found at church - 01/12

CUMBERLAND — Cumberland police and fire department and the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the First Presbyterian Church at 11 Washington St. where a suspicious device was discovered late Friday morning.

Church employees told police a small item with wires attached was found outside the church.

The scene was secured to maintain safety and technicians from the fire marshal’s office bomb squad rendered the device safe and examined it.

The item was determined not to be an explosive device and it did not contain any harmful substances.

The purpose of the item could not be determined but it did not appear to have been related to any criminal activity, said a police department spokesman.
