FORT ASHBY, W.Va. — The cause of Saturday night’s fire that destroyed a Sunrise Heights residence remains under investigation but “nothing appears suspicious,” according to Deputy Chief Greg Long of the Fort Ashby Volunteer Fire Company.
The residence of Jim Whitman and his wife was declared a total loss following the incident that occurred at about 9 p.m. The couple escaped without injury and are reportedly staying with their son in Frostburg.
Several volunteer fire companies responded but were hampered by heavy snow that covered hydrants and equipment that froze up during the firefighting operation.
The incident was one of 28 calls that the Fort Ashby fire and ambulance volunteers responded to between Friday morning and early Monday afternoon.
The West Virginia Army National Guard 201st Field Artillery Battalion, Keyser detachment, was stationed at the Fort Ashby fire station on state Route 28 since Friday. The unit accompanied the fire company on all of the calls with three soldiers and a Humvee. This included numerous ambulance calls, disabled vehicles and reports of trees down in addition to Saturday’s fire at Sunrise Heights.
