POTOMAC PARK - Mike Hutchinson and Jeremy Fisher smacked run-scoring singles in a five-run fifth inning, Marc Atkins went the distance and the Cumberland Orioles beat the Tri-State Titans 6-4 to win their third straight Pen-Mar Baseball League championship Sunday afternoon at Holler Field.
The win gave the Orioles, sponsored by Romney Cycles, a sweep of the best-of-five series. It was the third straight year that Cumberland and Tri-State had met in the finals.
Tri-State, the regular-season champion, and Cumberland, the regular-season runner-up, finished the season with overall 22-8 records.
Tri-State outhit Cumberland 7-5 and scored runs in three of its seven at-bats, but Cumberland won it with the big fifth inning. The five-run outburst turned a 3-1 Tri-State edge into a 6-3 Cumberland lead.
The Orioles got complete games from their starting pitchers in all three games of the series. Atkins scattered seven hits, walked one and struck out eight for the victory.
Brandon Benson doubled, drove in a run and scored a run, and Hutchinson singled, knocked in one run and scored twice to lead the Cumberland attack.
Justin Jenkins led all hitters with a double, single and three RBIs for Tri-State. Matt Wright had two singles.
The Titans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when the game's first three hitters - Brian Powell, Wright and Jenkins - singled, with the hit by Jenkins driving home Powell.
Cumberland got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Hutchinson reached on an error and scored on Benson's double.
After three scoreless innings Tri-State went ahead 3-1 in the fifth on Jenkins' double, which scored Burns and Wright, who had singled.
But again the lead didn't last long, as the Orioles struck for five runs in the bottom half. Brandon House drew a walk and Sean Lindner singled to start the inning. Hutchinson singled home House, and after a walk to Benson loaded the bases, Jeremy Fisher singled home the tying run.
Chad Chambers and Tony Fetters were hit by pitches with the bases loaded to give Cumberland a 5-3 lead, and Sean Collette's sacrifice fly capped the inning, making it 6-3.
Tri-State got a run back in the sixth when Josh Logsdon was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a single by Bill Davis.
Cumberland had won the first two games of the series on Saturday, 7-2 and 8-3. Orioles coach Buck Lough credited his entire team for repeating as playoff champions, and noted the contributions of high school players Collette and Ellsworth (Allegany) and Sean Fazenbaker (Mountain Ridge) as key throughout the season.
