CUMBERLAND - Pinch-hitter Dave Hetz singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning of the opener, and Sean Lindner smacked a two-run triple in a five-run third inning in the nitecap as local rivals Tri-State and Cumberland split their Pen-Mar/WV League doubleheader Sunday at Allegany College.
Tri-State took the opener, 2-1, and Cumberland came back to win the second by a 7-2 count.
In the first game, Hetz's single gave the win to Brian Powell, who was locked in a pitchers duel with Cumberland's Josh Kuykendall.
Powell allowed only five hits and no earned runs. He walked one and struck out five. Kuykendall scattered seven hits, struck out four and walked none.
Tri-State took a 1-0 lead in the second when Josh Logsdon doubled and scored on a single by Nate Dick. Cumberland tied it in the third when Brandon Benson reached on an error and scored on a single by Mike Hutchinson.
In the decisive seventh, Kody Stiffey singled for Tri-State, and after a passed ball and groundout, scored on the single by Hetz.
Stiffey had two singles for Tri-State. Chad Chambers and Sean Collette hit doubles for Cumberland.
In the second game, Cumberland trailed 1-0 until taking control with the big five-run third. Hutchinson and Jeremy Fisher had RBI singles and Chambers an RBI double before Lindner capped the inning with a two-run triple.
Fisher was 2-for-2 with two runs scored an an RBI, and Josh Dolly was 2-for-4 with a double, single and two RBIs to lead the Orioles.
Tony Fetters got the win with an eight-hitter, four walks and 10 strikeouts.
Logsdon went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles, Tristin Beyer singled twice and Jim Barrett doubled for Tri-State.
Cumberland (7-4 overall, 5-3 in the league) will host Boonsboro at Holler Field on Saturday, and travel to Petersburg on Sunday in 1 p.m. twinbills.
Tri-State visits Oakland on Saturday and Clarksburg on Sunday in 1 o'clock doubleheaders.
