CUMBERLAND — Early Rise Flies, a business with three successful years online, has opened a retail store at 457 N. Centre St.
Partners Chris Turner and Daniel Syverstad met at their day jobs as correctional officers with the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services and it didn’t take long for them to start talking about trout fishing.
Turner said Monday that he sees the store becoming a sort of trout fishing grand central station where anglers cannot only buy what they need, but get tips about what flies to use and where to use them.
And if the angler likes, he or she can simply plop down at the tying table and manufacture a fly or two.
“This coming spring we plan to begin offering guided trips to the area waters, concentrating on the North Branch of the Potomac, Casselman, Youghiogheny and Savage in Maryland and the Smoke Hole area of West Virginia and Yellow Creek in Pennsylvania,” Turner said.
The store will have displays showing which flies are working in which waters.
Put-and-take anglers aren’t forgotten at this fly shop.
“We actually fabricate our spinner parts,” Turner said, adding that he has developed some new flies to be fished with the spinner-fly type lure so popular in area waters. Salmon eggs, Berkley Powerbait and even live bait will be available as well.
About late November or early December, the store will become a Maryland hunting and fishing license agent.
Shu Fly fly rods in various weights are sold at the business.
“We are a strong backer of the Nemacolin Chapter of Trout Unlimited,” Turner said. In fact, chapter treasurer Russ Yoder is a part-time employee at Early Rise Flies.
Turner said the shop will rent tying equipment and fishing gear. In the spring a representative of Korkers will be available to explain how an adaptive wader boot the store will offer can be switched from felt to other bottoms so an angler can be legal and safe fishing in various states.
And, of course, the store will offer fly tying classes that will complement those already taught by the local TU chapter.
The shop may be called at 240-362-7575. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Turner said he considers the new business to be a perfect fit with the specialty shop atmosphere of downtown Cumberland.
