AGSA opposes Garrett antler legislation

CUMBERLAND — The clubs within the Allegany-Garrett Sportsmen’s Association have voted to oppose legislation that would require legal bucks in Garrett County to have at least three antler points on one side before they could be harvested.

Delegate Wendell Beitzel’s House Bill 990 would have that result if passed and signed. A hearing scheduled for March 13 at the Environmental Matters Committee has been canceled.

AGSA President Jerry Zembower said the main objection is that legislation would make the antler point restriction a law and that it could be changed only by future legislation.

“The Wildlife & Heritage Service can create a regulation for antler points and that’s the way it should be done. If changes to the regulation are needed in the future, it wouldn’t be necessary to go through the General Assembly to make them,” Zembower said.

Beitzel told the Times-News the legislation was requested by the local chapter of the Quality Deer Management Association.
