The bear kill during the Maryland season was 92. The method of harvest included:
1 - handgun, a Thompson Center Contender 30-06.
2 - muzzleloader, one 45 caliber and one 50 caliber.
1 - 12 gauge slug.
The following centerfire rifle calibers were used by more than one successful hunter:
17 - 7mm
17 - 270
13 - 30-06
11 - 300 magnum
6 - 308
4 - 243
3 - 280
2 - 30-30
Other calibers accounted for the bagging of one bear each. Harry Spiker, of the Maryland Wildlife & Heritage Service, said that over the years, more bear hunters — successful and unsuccessful — have hunted with the 30-06 by far.
The number of bears to have died on Maryland roads this year remains at 50, according to the unofficial count kept by the Times-News.
WHS’s Clarissa Harris says, though, that bears are still out and about and on the move. Harris said she saw one from her Garrett County treestand as she hunted on the last day of the firearms season.
