The number of bears to die on Maryland roads this year has risen to 46, according to an unofficial count tabulated by the Cumberland Times-News.
On Oct. 26, a male bear of 136 pounds was struck and killed on Interstate 68 atop Martin’s Mountain.
On Nov. 2, in Garrett County, a 172-pound male bruin died on I-68 at Green Lantern Road.
On Nov. 3, on I-68 just west of Friendsville, an eastbound medium-sized sedan was totaled when it struck and killed a 501-pound male bear, according to Clarissa Harris of the Maryland Wildlife & Heritage Service. “The interstate was closed for a while until a snowplow could get there to move the bear,” Harris said. There were no injuries to the occupants of the vehicle.
Recently agency personnel had to chase a bear away from an unoccupied seasonal home at Harvey’s Peninsula at Deep Creek Lake. “Somebody plowing snow nearby saw the bear denned under the house near a fuel tank,” Harris said. “I called the homeowner in Florida and made her aware of the situation.”
