I appreciate Jeremy Gosnell’s well thought-out rebuttal (“Address this problem with common sense, not religion” Jan. 29 Times-News) to my letter (“Historical facts speak to our founding based on religion,” Jan. 24 Times-News).and know that he gives voice to the opinion of many people, brought up in the current educational system.
My aim is to offer an alternative point of view. Gosnell mentions Duke University as being founded by Quakers and Methodists, curiously, he neglects to point that every Ivy League University, and 106 of the first 108 colleges started in America, had a Christian foundation.
Many great scientists and mathematicians proclaim the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ right along with their other endeavors. It is only a very recent phenomenon that “science” is seen as an enlightened alternative to the darkness of religious belief.
Denial of the Creator (who is prominently mentioned in the Declaration of Independence) forces scientists to chalk up the engineering masterpiece of DNA to happenstance. It turns out ones beliefs or unbelief, greatly colors the way you view the world.
Since man has had a long history on this planet, Gosnell and the masses that he speaks for should be able to point to a society or culture that has used “scientific, sociological and medical study, along with commonsense regulation” to solve gun violence.
Sadly they cannot, and the reason is clearly explained in the book that they reject as truth. Mark 7:21 is the reference to look up. Until the heart is changed, no real change will take place.
The purpose of the Second Amendment takes this truth into account and allows for a “militia” to be a deterrent to the rise of a tyrannical government.
If you think such a government “could never happen here,” you are ripe for it to happen.
No one is advocating “shoving religion” down anyone’s throat, but where there have been large scale revivals of Christianity (the real thing) there are documented drops in crime.
Historical examples of this are; Hebrides Islands-1949, Rome, N.Y.-1825, Wales-1904.
It is prayer for revival that ultimately leads to a decrease in gun violence, but that requires repentance, an admission of guilt by the individual and the nation, and a cry for the mercy of God.
Everything else is like leaning your full weight on a “broken reed.”
