Are you kidding? Were these articles in your paper on Aug. 31 (“City officials considering security for pedestrian mall,” Page 1A) and Sept. 1 (“Downtown may gain code enforcers”) a joke?
Please tell me the city of Cumberland is not really considering hiring downtown code enforcement officers. Didn't the city just consider laying off firefighters due to the poor economy?
This city is a mess. The roads are unpassable.
Surely if the city just came into a windfall, they can find something better to spend the money on.
How will the city come up with their half of the money to pay for these officers?
Let me guess, tax increases.
If the Downtown Development Commission feels the need more protection than the current city police can provide, let them take care of it themselves.
They can get the merchants together and form a crime watch, like is done in other city neighborhoods. If they cannot gather enough volunteers for this duty, let them pay for their own private security like they do at the Country Club Mall.
It is foolish spending like this that has this city in such dire straights. Let’s end the foolishness now.

Not in the Bible, but the Communist Manifesto
President Obama has hit a new low. By promoting his reasoning for hiking taxes on the rich at the National Prayer Breakfast, he diminished the seriousness of his proposals and manipulated Jesus’ teachings for his own political purposes. How pathetic.

Argument for same-sex marriage is superficial
I am writing in response to a letter by Ian Stafford entitled, “Equal standards on marriage should be applied to everyone” (Feb. 3 Times-News).
The first thing I noticed about the article is the title. It appeared to be a Gov. O’Malley talking point repeated by his supporter to reframe the issue and promote his radical agenda. -
