Keep watch

Vigilant neighbors can help thwart vandalism

— The slashing of tires on more than 25 vehicles on Cumberland’s West Side in the early morning hours last Thursday emphasizes the need for more vigilance by neighbors as well as police.

Tires were slashed on vehicles in the Greene, Washington and Fayette street areas. In most cases, it was not just one tire on a car, it was two or more. A couple of unfortunate victims had all four tires slashed.

This is no minor vandalism. Thousands of dollars had to be paid out in tire replacement purchases and towing costs.

There are frequent reports of vandalism in the Times-News. Fortunately, not many of the incidents involve so many victims at one time.

Neighborhood watch groups in Cumberland and outlying areas have been doing a good job of assisting police by calling in tips and keeping watch on homes and businesses. The groups meeting regularly and encourage their neighbors to report anything suspicious.

We realize that our police officers are kept busy 24-7. But we encourage them to redouble their efforts in patrolling neighborhoods and questioning people who may be on the street at 3 or 4 a.m. Many people have a legitimate reason for being out at that hour, but some do not.

Anyone with information about last Thursday’s damage to the vehicles or information of suspicious people observed in the area is encouraged to contact City Police at 301-777-1600 or Allegany/Mineral County Crime Solvers at 877-722-4307 or 301-722-4300.
