“Take a kid fishing” is some of the best advice we’ve heard. Legislation now before the General Assembly would make that easier in Maryland by letting people fish for free in various fresh-water ponds, lakes and streams.
The measure, requested by the Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Division, would have a two-fold effect: It would help introduce youngsters to the joy of one of America’s favorite outdoor pastimes, and in so doing could lead to their becoming revenue- and economy-boosting licenseholders who patronize tackle shops.
People under the age of 16 aren’t required to have a license in order to fish, but adults who accompany them are. Being able to fish for free with the youngster, instead of just having to watch, will add to the enjoyment of the adventure.
The goal is to have at least one or two free fishing sites in each Maryland county, possibly located in safe, accessible places like public parks. Maryland already designates June 2, June 9 and July 4 as days when anyone can fish anywhere in the state without a license.
It’s an idea that’s worth trying.

School is boring but we all have to go, so choose your school carefully. I attend a Christian school because I don’t have to listen to people cussing, teachers and some class mates are caring, and I’m learning about Christ.
