I thank, and agree with, Alexander Brant’s very reasonable and reasoned letter (“The government doesn’t want to take your guns,” Jan. 17 Times-News).
The issue over gun control is not to take away everyone’s sporting weapons. It is to eliminate military grade assault weapons and certain ammunition that are not used in hunting. It is also ensure that purchasers of weapons be cleared to be able to do so.
In the same issue of the Times-News, Joel Jackson (“Armed men are citizens; unarmed men are subjects”) argues that “a screwdriver can be an assault weapon.” However, in this past year’s mass shootings, the assailants could not have killed the numbers of people that they did with a screwdriver or hammer (another “weapon” Mr. Jackson mentions).
This is not about violating someone’s “rights” to have these weapons. It’s about safety and about all of our rights not to be killed in a mass shooting.
This serious issue needs discussion that seeks solutions, not simply taking a stance that solves nothing.

Flag Day
