I would like to offer my insight and opinion on Richard W. Jones (“We can protect ourselves and the Second Amendment,” Jan. 29 Times-News).
Chicago has one of the strictest, if not the strictest, gun control laws in this nation (as well as Washington) and gun control is not working there. Why not? Criminals do not follow the law!
Citizens do not carry around on the streets fully automatic rifles as American troops do in hostile regions of the world.
The term “assault weapons” is used by liberals and the liberal media to hype the public up. The guns are called “modern sporting firearms,” but that name does not stir any emotion, so the liberal media and gun-control advocates came up with the name “assault weapon” to stir strong emotion.
Gen. Stanley McChrystal is entitled to his opinion (First Amendment, free speech) but he does not speak for me or my fellow gun owners (Second Amendment, right to bear arms) and all law abiding citizens.
If McChrystal is allowed to use his First Amendment rights, then please do not strip me of my Second Amendment rights.
Participating in what was billed by the White House as a “Fireside Hangout” on the website Google+, Vice President Joe Biden acknowledged that “assault weapons” (modern sporting firearms) account for a small fraction of gun deaths in America.
Mark Mattioli, whose son, James, 6, was killed at Sandy Hook, asked the committee ‘What have those gun laws done to make Chicago a safer city?” Mattioli went on to condemn liberals for using the attack on Newtown to “spread fear on gun issues.”
Only four handguns were used in the attack and found at the school in Connecticut, according to NBC News. Adam Lanza tried to purchase a gun in Danbury, Conn., which has very strict gun control laws, and was denied the purchase a rifle on Dec. 11. Your so called “assault rifle” was found in the trunk of the vehicle.
On Dec. 13, Lanza went to the school and had an altercation with four staff members, according to NBC News. Why has the media not covered this? Because this will not help their gun-control movement or agenda.
I and most gun owners have no problem with universal background checks. We back this 100 percent. Why has the president not asked for this by itself? Because he has an agenda of universal gun control.
Mr. Jones, you make no mention of holding the media or the violent video games industry accountable for their part in the decline of America’s values or lives.
The President of the United States received financial support in his re-election campaign from the Hollywood elite and has made no mention of media. Is this right? No it is not!
Mr. Jones, you make no mention of the “Fast and Furious.” Why is that? Why has no one has been prosecuted for breaking guns laws that are already on the books?
Why are you not standing up for the people who were killed by the guns from the “Fast and Furious”? No one cares about them because there is nothing to be gained politically.
Shame on all of you. Brian Terry, a Border Patrol agent, was killed with guns from the “Fast and Furious” Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agent Jaime Zapata in Mexico in February 2011

Town of Westernport needs a police force and a curfew
Since the consolidation of Bruce and Valley high schools the town of Westernport rapidly deteriorated from what was once a quite respectable community to a community in a decline in residents, and along with that came a collapse in local government due to lack of knowledge and bad decisions that set the town of Westernport back 60 years.
One bad decision was to give up their police force, and with no constant visual law enforcement it has created an open range for drug dealerss, addicts, thieves, drunks and speeding vehicles that choose to ignore our city laws and speed limits and have totally disregard for the safety of the citizens who are on the streets, especially the children who are like deer, you don’t see them until their in front of you. -

Rowley proof of experience breeding opportunity
When Bob Rowley learned of the fund-raising efforts to help provide Fort Hill football player Zac Elbin the opportunity to play in the Down Under Bowl this summer in Australia, it became a mere reflex for him to make a significant contribution on Elbin’s behalf. For while very few area high school football players have followed in his footsteps, Rowley, the former Fort Hill great from the late 1950s, had certainly walked in Elbin’s, having faced similar circumstances following his senior year in high school. And thanks to the support of the community, Rowley says he was able to realize an opportunity of a lifetime.

Better fix it
The West Virginia Division of Highways should not give up on improving safety at the intersection of U.S. Route 220 and Stoney Run Road in Keyser merely because the intersection does not meet the state’s criteria for a traffic signal.
