SALISBURY, Pa. — Dr. Katherine A. Almquist, 44, of Salisbury, Pa., died Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, Cumberland, of natural causes.
She was born in Naperville, Ill., to parents Richard P. Almquist, of Analomink, Pa., and Loretta M. (Barnes) Al-mquist, of Analmink, Pa.
Dr. Almquist was an Assistant Professor of Foreign Languages and Coordinator of Liberal Studies at Frostburg State University in Frostburg. She held a Ph.D. and M.A. from Columbia University and an A.B. from the University of Chicago. Dr. Almquist was a scholar of Renaissance legal history, 19th century historiography, and Michel de Montaigne. She was a world-respected authority on the writings of Michel de Montaigne. She had extensive knowledge of Renaissance French handwriting styles and was frequently called upon by the French authorities to identify the author of Renaissance legal documents. She had been working on a book about Montaigne’s written work while he was a member of the French parliament at Bordeaux. She taught upper level French courses using a history of ideas methodology and lower level courses using a communicative method. She was a member of the Modern Language Association, The Sixteenth Century French Society, the Renaissance Society of America, and the Columbia University Seminar on Early Modern France.
Surviving in addition to her parents are one brother, Richard, husband of Heather Almquist, of Exeter Twp., Pa. and one niece, Oriana L. Almquist.
Public graveside services will be held on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at noon in Salisbury Elk Lick Cemetery, Smith Ave., Salisbury, Pa.
There will be no viewing.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Katherine Ann Almquist Scholarship at the FSU Foundation, 101 Braddock Road, Frostburg, MD 21532-2303 (301) 687-4161.
