KEYSER, W.Va. — Ronald “Ron” B. Mathias, 71, of Keyser, W.Va., died on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Potomac Valley Hospital.
Born on Nov. 13, 1941, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Bruce Seymour and Catherine (Stanley) Mathias.
Mr. Mathias was a 1959 graduate of Keyser High School, attended Potomac State College and West Virginia University and was a U.S. Navy Viet Nam veteran. He was owner/operator of MEGCO Inspection Agency and the Keyser City Building Inspector. Previously, he did commercial and residential construction under his company, Mathias Contracting. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Loyal Order of Moose 662 and Boyce Houser Post 41.
Ron was instrumental in developing the athletic complexes at Keyser High School. He was most proud of the Keyser High School Girls Softball Field which was named in his honor. He loved coaching youth sports and was a volunteer coach for numerous girls youth basketball and softball teams. He was the head softball coach of Keyser High School in 2008 and 2009 and coached them when they participated in their first ever regional championship game. In 2009, he was named Potomac Valley Conference Softball Coach of the Year.
Awards honoring Ron included Mineral County Chamber of Commerce Youth Involvement Volunteer of the Year 2005, WV Athletic Directors Association Distinguished Service 2012 Award, Keyser High School Athletic Hall of Fame 2012 Service Inductee and WV Home Inspectors Award 2012.
Pap was an amazing grandfather and loving husband and father. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, outdoors and his family.
Surviving are his wife, Carol A. (Miers) Mathias; his two daughters, Michelle Anderson and husband D. J., of Keyser and Dr. Ronna Monseau, of Morgantown; his two granddaughters, Meghan and Madison Anderson and his sister, Dorothy Jean Mathias, of Burlington. He was also survived by brothers-in law James F. Miers and Kenneth Miers and wife Bev and several nieces and nephews including David Miers and Jimmy Michael Miers.
Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, from 5 to 8 p.m.
A memorial service will be held in the Grace United Methodist Church, 30 S. Mineral St., Keyser, on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. James A. McCune officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to services.
