ELKTON, Fla. — Anthony Wayne Clise, of Elkton, Fla., formerly of Cumberland, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at the Bailey Family Hospice Center in St. Augustine, Fla.
Born Oct. 6, 1917, in Midland, he was the son of the late Bridget Ellen (Nolan) Clise and John Lester Clise. He was also preceded in death by three siblings, John Clise, Elsie Hentges and Gilbert Clise; his late wife, Suzanne (Durst) Clise; daughter, Julie Sayre; son, Daniel Clise; grandson, Jared O'Connor and two step-sons, Joseph Durst III and Jeffrey Durst.
Surviving are his wife, Alice (Durst) Clise, of Elkton, Fla.; brother, Raymond “Lindy” Clise, of Bowie and granddaughter, Jennifer O'Hara, of Wilmington, N.C. Also surviving are two step-children, Jane Durst, of Elkton, Fla. and John (Sandra) Durst, of Frostburg; a sister-in-law, Libby Durst, of Frostburg; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
He was known to those he loved as “Big,” and is survived by his special buddy “Otis.”
Mr. Clise graduated from Central High School in Lonaconing and from Temple University in Philadelphia with a degree in Mortuary Science.
He retired from the U.S. Government Civil Service as a housing officer for the Navy. He was a staff sergeant in the Army while serving in the Philippines in World War II.
He was a life member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge 470, and a member of the American Legion both in Frostburg.
A private service and inurnment will be conducted in the Frostburg Memorial Park, Frostburg, at a later date.
