CUMBERLAND — His last wish was to die at home, just like his wife did 12 years ago. Thanks to his daughters and Hospice home care, Russell Dawson was able to receive his last wish. Russell Daniel Dawson, 93 years old, of Cumberland, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012.
Born Oct. 2, 1919, in Ridgeley, W.Va., he was the son of the late Daniel McKinley Dawson and Estella (Umstot) Dawson. He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Anna (Martiney) Dawson, who raised him; his wife of 54 years, Margaret “Marie” Dawson; a sister, Alice Jane Resh and a brother, Arnold Dawson.
Russell was a member of Grace Baptist Church.
He was a World War II veteran. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1941 where he served until honorably discharged in 1945. Russell was assigned to Company “G” 115th Infantry, 29th Division. He participated in four major campaigns and performed duties under combat conditions. After serving his duty, he returned to Cumberland and worked many years at the Celanese Corporation. He eventually retired from the City of Cumberland after 25 years of service.
Russell was a lifetime member of Aerie 245, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and Fort Cumberland Post 13, American Legion.
He could be seen for many years sitting on the front porch of his Fayette Street home with his dog, JD.
Survivors include his daughter, Donna Bryan, with whom he resided, of Cumberland, Carole Dunlap, of Mexico Farms and Thelma Rowe, of LaVale; grandsons Gary Wayne Stanley and Rene, of Port St. Joe, Fla., Michael Stanley and Kim, of Tallahassee, Fla., David Dimascio and Holly, of Sprakers, N.Y., Bill Dunlap and Nancy, of Cumberland and Fred Rowe and Laurie, of Stephens City, Va. and great-grandchildren, Bryant, Hannah, Danielle, Melinda, Devin, Brianna, David Jr., Freddy IV and Zachery.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be conducted in Grace Baptist Church, 211 Greene St., Cumberland, on Friday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Keith Aguila officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, where military honors will be accorded by Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations be made to either WMHS Hospice, 1050 W. Industrial Blvd., Cumberland, MD 21502 or to the Allegany County Animal Shelter, 716 Furnace St., Cumberland, MD 21502.
