CUMBERLAND — Hugh A. McMullen, 84, of Cumberland, passed away on Friday, Nov. 30, 2012 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 26, 1928 in Cumberland, he was the son of the late John J. McMullen, Sr. and Louise (Gable) Mc-
Mullen. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Walsh and husband Bill.
He served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957.
Mr. McMullen was a local attorney. He was partner in the firm of Geppart, McMullen, Paye and Getty for 50 years. He was a graduate of LaSalle high School, class of 1946, a graduate of Mount Saint Mary’s College Class of 1951, the University of Maryland School of Law class of 1954. Hugh had worked for the Trust Department of Mercantile Bank in Baltimore, Maryland before returning to Cumberland. He was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Parish.
Hugh was a member of the Mount Saint Mary’s University Board of Trustees, the University of Maryland Board of Trustees, the Sacred Heart Hospital Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the League of Crippled Children, the attorney for the Cumberland Municipal Airport Authority, and a member of the Board of Directors for Fidelity Bank, Frostburg, Maryland. Hugh was also a member of the American Legion Fort Cumberland Post 13, a member of the Knights of Columbus Cumberland Council Number 586 and he was a former attorney for the City of Cumberland.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lois (O’Donell) McMullen; three sons, John J. McMullen, Hugh A. McMullen, Jr. and wife Carol and Daniel F. McMullen, Annapolis; two brothers, John J. McMullen and wife Dolores, Cumberland and Daniel F. McMullen and wife Valarie; a sister, Mary Bailey and husband Robert, Hilton Head, S.C. Also surviving are two nieces, Susan Brewer and husband Regan, Issaquate, Wash., and Betsy Sherrier, S.C., surrogate grandchildren, Alex and Keara Brewer and Libby Shearer and several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave. (www.scarpellifh.com) on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012 from 2 to 5 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church on Monday at 10 a.m. with Fr. Bernard Finerty, O.F.M., Cap. officiating.
Interment will be in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to The League For Crippled Children, 12501 Willowbrook Rd., Cumberland, Maryland, 21502.
