FLINTSTONE — Calvin Edison Beeman, 86, of Flintstone, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at the Lions Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation of natural causes.
Born Jan. 26, 1926, in Lonaconing, Mr. Beeman was the son of the late George Edward Beeman and Ann Lucretia (Llewellyn) Beeman. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Luretta May (Hendrickson) Beeman, April 1, 2005.
At the age of three, young Edison developed pneumonia, which led to a potentially fatal bone infection in his hip called Osteomyelitis. With the help of the Crippled Children's League, young Beeman traveled to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore where a nationally renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. William Baer, operated on him and employed a novel medical technique using maggots to heal the bone infection on young Edison and thus saved his life.
Edison worked at the Celanese Fibers Corporation of America where he met his wife, Luretta. After being furloughed from the Celanese, Edison went to work as a heavy equipment operator joining the Operating Engineers Union Local 37 in 1951. With over 37 years with the Operating Engineers, he worked on numerous local construction projects, including the Cumberland Flood Control, Rocky Gap, the Bloomington Dam, and the Sideling Hill cut on Interstate 68.
Edison was a devout Christian, lay minister, deacon and a member of the Oak Dale Chapel near Flintstone. He enjoyed gardening and was very creative. Edison could make or build whatever he needed out of whatever he had available.
Edison is survived by his daughter, Carole (Beeman) Dobbs and husband, David, Fairfax Station, Va. In addition, he is survived by his grandson, Aaron Dobbs and his wife, Jamie, and their two daughters, Julia and Madelyn, all of Burke, Va. Edison is also survived by three sisters, Agnes Wolford, Cresaptown, Althea Shaw, LaVale, and Norma Brode and husband, Paul, Lonaconing.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.adamsfamilyfunralhome.com) on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ray Mallow and the Rev. Fred Hendrickson officiating.
Interment will be in the International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery in Flintstone.
