WALDORF — James Cameron Meyers (known to all as Jim) passed peacefully from this life the morning of Feb. 13, 2013, after a brief hospital stay. He was supported by his family and caregivers during the last days of his life.
Jim was born in Cumberland, and lived in his childhood home in Lonaconing most of his life. He has lived in Charles County since 1998, first with his brother, brother’s wife and nephew, and since 2009 at his own residence with Spring Dell, who operates an assisted living program for the developmentally disabled in Charles County.
Jim is survived by his brother John, John’s wife, Cathy and their son Evan, his adopted family of Cathy’s relatives, Bill and Emilie Long, Aunt Polly, and the extended Long family; his aunt, Babs Meyers, aunt Peggy Meyers, uncle De Sales Meyers, uncle Mike Meyers, and many first and second cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Meyers (1991); his father, John C. Meyers (1998); his favorite aunts and uncles, Mary, Catherine, Margie, Joe and George; and his favorite dog, Storm.
He worked at Friends Aware in Cumberland until early 1998 when he relocated and began work at Spring Dell Center in La Plata, where he worked until his death. He was a fan of Star Trek, high school basketball, especially Valley High School, collected squeeze wallets and dental floss boxes, and was an avid and skilled bowler. The family celebrates that in his passing Jim gave a great gift by being an organ donor.
He will live on in the hearts of his family, caregivers, and friends. He was with truly accurate certainty, a notable presence in all the lives of we who knew him. So that is his memorial; his laughing, unforgettable presence.
The visitation and service were held on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013 at 11a.m. at the Raymond Funeral Home, Washington Avenue, La Plata.
Burial will follow after his final trip home to Lonaconing, where he will be interred with his parents at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing, (www.eichhornmckenzie.com) handled the final arrangements.
To honor Jim, donations may be made to Spring Dell Center, La Plata, or any charity of the donor’s choice.
