RIDGELEY, W.Va. — Rich-ard William Ryan, 91, of Ridgeley, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013 at the Lions Center.
Born Nov. 17, 1921, in Shenandoah, Va., he was the son of the late William McKinley Ryan and Rosa Maggie (Breeden) Ryan. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Joan Murial Ryan on Feb. 24, 2003., his stepmother, Martha V. (Corwall) Ryan and a brother, Ronald E. Ryan.
He is survived by one daughter, Linda J. Rice and husband Sandy, Cumberland; two sons, Robert M. Ryan and Susan Cannon-Ryan, Charlestown, W.Va., and Ricky W. Ryan and wife Paula, Flintstone; five grandchildren, Richard A. Rice and wife Shelley, Cumberland, Christopher D. Rice and wife Cheryl, Auburn, Ga., Nicholas P. Ryan, Morgantown, Andrew S. Ryan, Charlestown, and Krista R. Ryan, Ca.; four great-grandchildren, Taylor and Madison Rice, Cumberland and Cole and Chloe Rice, Auburn. Also, one sister, Arletta Abe.
Mr. Ryan was a veteran of the United States Army of World War II serving with the military police. His duties included guarding military establishments, escorting prisoners of war, and patrolling towns in England. He was employed by Ironworkers Local 568 as a structural steel and rodman and worked in the Cumberland area for 49 years. He was a member of the Ridgeley VFW. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed boating on Rocky Gap and bow hunting.
Family and friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A, 108 Virginia Ave. (www.scarpellifh.com) on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013 from 4 to 8 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, Feb. 20 ,2013, at 1 p.m., with Pastor Larry Green officiating.
Pallbearers will be Rich, Chris and Taylor Rice, Nick and Andy Ryan, and Larry Webb, Sr.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.
Military Honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
