OAKLAND — Ellen A. Friend Shillingburg, 79, of Oakland, died on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at Monongalia General Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va.
Born on June 5, 1933, in Oakland, she was the daughter of the late Earl C. and Margaret (Mellinger) Johnston. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Wilmer E. Friend, in 1987; a granddaughter, Deidre Friend DeBerry; a brother, Hershel Johnston and a sister, Wilda Fazzalore.
She had been a Registered Nurse, having worked at Garrett Memorial Hospital for many years. Crocheting was her passion and she was also an avid gardener. Ellen touched many lives through her 55 years as a 4-H Leader and during her time as Garrett County Fair Superintendent. She was a member of the 4-H All Stars, a charter member of the Meadow Glade Homemakers and a member of the North Glade Homemakers.
She is survived by her husband, Lee E. Shillingburg; a daughter, Debra E. Friend and husband Tom Tressler, of Oakland; sons, Edwin O. Friend and wife Louella, of Swanton and Darwin E. Friend and wife Mary Lynn, of Oakland; grandchildren, Edwin O. Friend, Jr. and wife Danielle, Kelly L. Buckley and husband Jason and Jody A. Friend and wife Aliza; step granddaughter, Marianne J. Dinardo and husband Dominic; great-grandchildren, Abby, Nicholas, Holly, Tailynn, Lauren and Brent; step great-granddaughter, Natalie Grace; and special granddog, Rusty.
Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland, on Monday, Nov. 5, from 3 to 8 p.m. and at St. John of Meadow Mountain Lutheran Church, Bittinger Road, Swanton, on Tuesday, Nov. 6, from 10 to 11 a.m.
A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Randolf Richardson and the Rev. Dave Terlizzi officiating.
Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery.
