MOUNT AIRY — John "Jack” William Devault, 82, of Mount Airy, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2012 at Kline Hospice House.
He was the husband of 60 years to Juanita Marie (Shirley) Devault
Mr. Devault was born Dec. 22, 1929 in Cumberland, the son of the late Harold Thomas Devault and the late Erma Pauline (Bone) Devault.
He is a U.S. Navy veteran, served in Korea aboard the USS Coral Sea from 1950-1954
Mr. Devault was a graduate of Allegany High School, class of 1950. He received his BS from Frostburg State College and his Master’s in Education from George Washington University in 1963. Mr. Devault started his career in education at Mount Airy Middle School in 1959 became Vice Principal of Westminster Junior High in 1965, 1966 he was Vice Principal in Charge of Administration at Mount Airy Senior High, 1967 Principal of Mount Airy Elementary School and was Principal of Mount Airy Middle School from 1974 until his retirement in 1990. He coached Mount Airy Little League Baseball as well as Mount Airy Woman’s Softball.
He enjoyed bowling and playing golf.
He was an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church where he taught Senior Sunday School and was Senior MYF Leader. He was a Mentor for their conformation Classes. A Greeter and an Usher and was responsible for setting up Communion for the 8 a.m. service. Mr. Devault was a Member of Mount Airy American Legion Gold Star Post 191, Past President and Treasurer of Mount Airy Kiwanis Club. A Life Member of MD State Teachers Association, Member of State and National Association of Secondary School Principals, Past President of Carroll County Teachers Association
Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters and sons-in-law, Diane M and Michael Hughes of Monrovia, Cheryl A. and Stephen Smith of Mount Airy; granddaughter, Sara M. Smith; and grandson, David M. Hughes.
Preceded in death by brother, Harold James Devault.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012 at 10 a.m. at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield.
Interment will be on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012 at noon at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 10901 Mason Road, N.E. Cumberland.
The family received friends on Monday, Oct. 22, 2012 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. There was a American Legion Memorial Service 7:30 p.m. Monday during the viewing.
