CUMBERLAND — Danny Lou Beck, 81, died Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
A lifelong resident of Cumberland, Dan was born June 7, 1931 to the late Maxie Helen Grimm Beck Bone and Marion Daniel Beck. He is also predeceased by his grandparents, Henry and Clara Ethel Grimm, who helped to raise him.
He spent his youth exploring “the Avenue” and graduated in 1950 from Fort Hill High School. In 1952, he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1954.
Dan had a career in sales. He worked in the sales department of The Potomac Edison Company and later as a salesman at Mr. Jack’s Appliance. He ended his career at Rusco Home Improvement, retiring in 1996.
He was a charter member of the Fort Hill F Club, a member of the Parents Club at Saint Mary’s, and a member of the VFW. He was of the Lutheran faith. Dan had a great sense of humor and jovial personality that earned him the nickname, Dancing Dan. He had a lifelong passion for horseracing and enjoyed watching classic movies. His greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 53 years, Mary Rita (Madden) Beck, whom he married April 17, 1960. He is also survived by their four children, Jeffrey D. Beck and wife Judi, Cresaptown, David E. Beck, Cumberland, Debra Larsson and husband Kaj, Annapolis, and Lori Gowans and husband Bryan, Cumberland; ten grandchildren, Jeremy Beck and wife Megan, Kate Gowans and fiance Mike Tupa, Luci Gowans, Zoe Gowans, Jesse Beck, Andrew Beck, Zachary Beck, Micah Beck, Nathan Beck and Caleb Beck; three great-grandchildren, Gabriella Beck, Jaiden Beck and Kacie Beeman; aunt, Louise Grimm; uncle, James P. Donahue, both of Cumberland, and several cousins. Danny is also survived by the “Terror of Montgomery Avenue” Mater.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave. (www.scarpellifh.com) on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m. with Deacon Dave Conley officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap.
Military Honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
